E-Z Disco Midge

Here is day two of winter fly ideas. I fished this fly for the first time a couple years ago in Pittsburg, NH and caught 16 inch rainbows every other cast for 2 days. The Disco Midge is great trailing a bigger fly or use a soft hackle in front of it. It is an easy-to-tie fly. This is a fly fisherman's dream fly, so here is how to whip them up.

Hook: Size 16 or smaller Scud/Midge hook
Thread: 6/0 White or Olive
Abdomen: Pearl Mylar Tinsel size 14
Thorax: Peacock Herl

1. Start out with a size 16 scud hook or a size of your preference. Wrap olive or white thread down the hook down to about where the barb of the hook is.
2. At the back of the hook, take pearl mylar tinsel and tie it in so you can wrap it forward.
3. After wrapping the mylar tinsel forward creating the abdomen, tie it off near the eye of the hook leaving room for a thorax. Tie in a few strands of peacock herl and wrap in a small thorax.
4. After you have wrapped the thorax, tie off the peacock herl and snip the excess. Whip finish and you are ready to fish!

The past two days have been illustrations of quick, easy-to-tie flies that will be lethal on the river any time of the year. While nymphing is hot right now, the Disco Midge and yesterday's Pheasant Tail should be the first two flies out of any fly fisherman's fly box.

Nymph away!
