Fly of the Week 2/4/2013: Glo-Bug Egg

Last week, I featured an update on the Salmon River, NY. A quality fly for this steelhead and salmon on the Salmon River is a Glo-bug. Colors should vary and when you fish the Salmon River, make sure you change colors often if you are not having luck. My favorite colors are pink, chartreuse, oregon cheese, and orange (add a dot for nucleus if you want). These are quick and easy to tie so give it a shot!

Step 1: Tie in thread and wrap back to hook barb then back to middle of the shank.

Step 2: You will need 3 pieces of McFly Foam, 1 inch each (some use 4 pieces-2 on top 2 on bottom-the number of pieces determines how full you want the egg). Take 2 of the cut pieces and tie in on the bottom. The first few wraps should be tied in loosely, then tighten and make another wrap or 2. Try to make all of the wraps in the same spot.

Step 3: Take the third piece and wrap it in on top, in the same place ase the first wraps.

Step 4: Move the thread to the front, then tie off and whip finish.

Step 5: Pull the strands of McFly Foam apart like in step 3 (top piece-both ends together) and snip material straight about 1/4 inch to 1/2 inch from the shank. You may think that you need to cut it round, but it will take shape as long as you cut straight. Do the same for the bottom (take the 4 strands, pull down together and cut straight about 1/4 inch to 1/2 inch from the hook shank). This will create your egg.

This is a necessary fly for your steelhead arsenal. Not only is it affective for steelhead,  but also brown trout, rainbows, and landlocked salmon.

These are easy to crank out in a short amount of time.
