Salmon Confidential

If you have an hour to spare, check this documentary out: Salmon Confidential

This is a major issue in British Columbia and biologist Alexandra Morton has been pushing the limits to spread awareness. Alexandra has done everything testing dead fish on river/shore lines and wild fish in rivers to testing fish sold in the markets. Farm bred salmon is hurting wild salmon because these farms are harvesting disease. The disease is spread from fish to fish in the farm then leaves in the water affecting wild fish sharing that water. Alexandra had a great analogy and that these diseases are like an oil spill. It is in the water and the water travels. If it starts in BC, it can travel down into America and it might not stop there. After watching the video, I will definitely take a harder look at the fish I see in the supermarket.

The three newly discovered European Viruses are:

  • ISA (Infectious Salmon Anemia) - appears to be most like influenza viruses
  • Salmon Alphavirus - causes Pancreas Disease
  • Piscine Reovirus - affects the flesh of the fish
Please check out the video and spread awareness. You never know what waters this might reach.
